LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF: Over the next few months you'll get to know a lot about me but mainly Ophelia Bakon
The Early Years: I was born in Covington, Georgia on October 28, 1947. The 5th of six children of Viola and Charlie Bakon. Mama said I weighed in at 13lbs and she was never the same again lol. That year, they grew their own food, she had pigs, chickens and an abundant crop. So she ate. She wasn't watching her waistline.
When I was two, mama said I contracted an infection in my eyes because I washed my hair and caught a cold. Whether that was true or not I don't know. She said before that I had the biggest, prettiest eyes. But the infection left me with weak eyelid muscles which gave my eyes an closed slanted look.
My Eyes: Today one of my best assets are my eyes. But growing up I was self conscious. I was called squinch-eye, China girl and, you know, when you're younger the last thing you want is to be different. I wanted eyes like every one else because when you're a child all you want is to be like everyone else. But I've learned that being different is what makes you unique.
Starting From Scratch: By the time I was 21 I had had three boys in five years and trying to escape a very abusive marriage to a man I did not love and I knew I had to get out of that marriage some way.
By the time I was 24 I was divorced and had barely escaped with my life in the process. I've never remarried and raised my sons as a single mother.
Finding God: At age 32, my sisters and I had opened our first boutique after many years of coordinating fashion shows. Interior decorating and fashion has always been and passion. So over the next few weeks you will hear a lot about these two passions.
Just as I was getting my footing, I found myself one morning writhing on the floor in pain. Rushed to the hospital, I was diagnosed with a bowel obstruction. After hours in the emergency room I was finally admitted but not to soon after I hear a code blue over the speaker. The code blue was for me. I was dying. I recovered after 3 weeks in ICU and I was sent home to recover. The recovery was the beginning of my transformation.
DAILY WORD: Mama visited me in the hospital. Gave me the Daily Word.
so began my spiritual journey.
